Extremist must not take over Christianity – Shehu Sani
By; Alex Uangbaoje, Kaduna.
Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial Zone, Shehu Sani, has called on government at all levels to play a role in supporting religious bodies, particularly the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to save it from destabilization by agents of extremism.
Addressing some officials of Kaduna State chapter of CAN when he paid a courtesy call on them, Senator Sani noted that if government failed to support the body, a vacuum may be created for religious extremists to destabilise the peace processes embarked upon by religious leaders.
“Government at all levels have a role to play in supporting your religious body, otherwise, vacuum will be created for extremists to take over the religious body that is working towards the sustainability of peace and harmony among the people”. Sani said.
The lawmaker called on CAN members to continue to play a role in ensuring that blood is no longer shed in the name of religion, adding that CAN has come a long way in building peaceful co-existence in the state and the country at large.
He pledged to partner with the state chapter of CAN in terms of skill acquisition for the youth, regretting however that “One of the problems today is that politic is being ran without ideology, because the young ones need education, work and moral direction for their future”.
He commended the Christian body for the role it played during the 2015 general election by mobilising the people for the change of government in ensuring the election of President Muhammadu Buhari.
He said it could amount to a dangerous development if religious leaders stand against the will of the people, adding that any religion that preaches materialism and profiteering should be discouraged and condemned.
Senator Sani said, though, standard of living was hard under President Buhari, it was going to be temporary as, “APC has no alternative than to succeed by uplifting the standard of living of the people.
“My office is open to you for any assistance to the young ones who need education, work and moral direction for their future. My office will partner with CAN to set up skill acquisition centre to empower the youths” Senator Sani added.
‎Responding, the Assistant Secretary, Kaduna State CAN, Mr. Raphael Adejumobi expressed gratitude to Senator Sani for deeming it fit to visit the Christian body after his election as Senator.
Adejumobi said Senator Sani’s brilliant contributions on the floor of the senate so far showed that there are good things in the offing for the people of his constituency.
He however, appealed to the lawmaker to assist the State chapter CAN in completing a 27-room guest house it had embarked upon few years ago to alleviate socio- economic setbacks of the association.
