Expert Tasks Nigerians On Digital Security

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO), YandyTech Community, Mohammed Bayero Yayandi has stressed the need for Nigerians to protect their data online.

Yayandi during a two-day training of Kaduna Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Youth Activists on digital security with support from European Union and Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called on Nigerians to increase their knowledge of new technologies, to stay safe from cyber-attacks and crimes.

He explained that the workshop aimed at strengthening the digital security and advocacy skills of the CSOs, CBOs and youth activists.

According to him, the workshop was designed for civil society actors to face civic space threats, risks, and challenges.

“Overtime, we understand that youths are vulnerable to social media and online in general, and we think it is important for us to bring them together and build their capacity to become more digitally resilience, so they can be able to battle the challenges they face digitally”.

Yayandi however, advised Nigerians to keep their data safe, urging them to stop disclosing their information to the public to avoid digital treats.

“Nigerians should be strategic while operating on social media, digital footprint is very key. We give out information online without thinking that it will backfire on us. Let us be careful of information we put out there”.

He tasked the participants to advocate to Kaduna State government to ensure domestication of the Freedom of Information Act.

The Project Officer, Coalition Association for Leadership Peace Empowerment and Development (CALPED), Luke Seth urged Nigerians to be conscious about the information they give out on social media.

He commended the organizers of the training and promised to step down the training to ensure data protection.

One of the participant, Yushau Mohammed Abubakar who is also a youth activist urged Nigerians to stop exposing their identity, noting the need to promote digital democracy.
