Students of the Ondo State Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, (RUGIPO) on Monday staged a protest  over the exemption from exams over non payment introduced by the management of the institution.

The protest,  according to reports, disrupted their second semester examination over the institution’s policy of no school fees, no examination.

The management of the polytechnic had earlier issued a circular stopping students who are yet to pay their tuition from participating in the exam.

Hos ever, the action did not go down well with the majority of the students as they kicked against the policy in a violent manner.

The aggrieved students were mostly those sent out from their various examination halls for non compliance with the payment directive.

They went on rampage and destroyed property on campus worth millions of Naira, including the ICT centre.

Reports say it took combined efforts of security operatives to control and stop the rampaging students.

Speaking with journalists over the incident, the President, Students Union Government RUGIPO Chapter, Comrade Temitayo Ayejuyo, described the protest as unfortunate, noting that SUG pleaded with  the management last semester over the policy and the institution allowed the students who were owing to write first semester examination.

The SUG president called for calm as the issue would be amicably resolved with the management.

Efforts to get the reaction of the polytechnic’s Rector, Mr Idowu Ologunagba proved unsuccessful as calls made to his telephone line were not picked.
