Environment: Kaduna Residents Embrace ‎’Cash for Trash’ Project

Kaduna ‎residents at the weekend keyed into “Cash for Trash” project, being executed by an environmental expert who specialises in waste management ZL Global Alliance (Nigeria) limited.
The residents came out in their numbers with their trash and exchanged them for cash in the ongoing ‎programme.
The cash for trash project whose pilot program kicked off at the weekend is part of the company’s collaborative efforts with Kaduna State Government towards making Kaduna clean, green, healthy and environmentaly friendly.
Earlier at the formal unveiling of the project, ‎the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of ZL Global Alliance Nigeria, Mrs. Abiola Bashorun said the ‘cash for trash’ initiative is meant to encourage the people to turn in their waste in exchange for cash, emphasising that,”Under the scheme, we shall be paying N1.00 per kilogramme of waste. We however expect a minimum of 10 to 25kg per lot.
Some of the residents who made money from their waste applauded the state government for engaging the environmental expert in cleaning the state and still paying people for their own waste.
 
One of the beneficiaries of the ‘Cash for trash’‎ project, Hajiya Talatu Yusuf said, “we are happy with this, Malam is really trying and we encourage him to continue this good work, at least within minutes now I have made some money which will help my family in one way or the other.”
Kabiru Sale who made almost N800 on the spot could not hide his joy, “Walahi, I am very happy with this company” he stressed.
Speaking on the project, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment and natural resources, Hajiya Hauwa Umar and one of the Directors in the ministry Ahmed Salihu who were on ground to witness what was happening, both expressed joy that the “cash for trash” project was being embrased by the people of the state.
It would also be recalled that at the unveiling of the project, the state Commissioner, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Shehu Balarabe gave the assurances of the state government to support the project which is aimed at making Kaduna clean, green and healthy.
“We will support you and ensure that you succeed in the discharge of your duties, the state government is happy with your efforts towards reducing its unemployment status, help her citizens to make money.”
 
The Managing Director who also was physically on ground, said she will do everything possible not to let down the confidence reposed on her by Malam Nasir El-Rufai and Kaduna State government.
She said, the project will be extended to other parts of the state until Kaduna State becomes the cleanest state in Nigeria.
