Electricity tariff: NLC, TUC picket Bauchi JED

By; Mohammed Kawu, Bauchi
Members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) jointly Monday picketed the Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) company premises to protest the planned increase of electricity tariff by the distribution companies.
The NLC and TUC members in Bauchi took the decision in strict adherence with the directive given them by the national bodies of the unions to protest the planned increase by the Electricity Distribution‎ Companies (Discos) in the country.
Members of the trade unions arrived the Jos Electricity Distribution office in Bauchi where they sealed the gate to prevent the company’s staff from entering their office.
Workers who came to the office in the morning left when they saw the protesting labour union members, while some of them hovers around discussing in groups about the development.‎‎
Speaking to our reporter‎ at the premises of JED office, Bauchi, TUC State Chairman, Comrade Muhammad Usman said that labour unions took the action in order to compel the electricity distribution companies to retract their decision to increase electricity tariff.
Usman explained that any increase in the electricity tariff will further compound the problems confronting Nigerians at present, adding “Our parent bodies directed us to take this action against the planned tariff increase”.
“We are doing this to help Nigerians because they are already suffering as the income of average Nigerian has drastically reduced considering the economic challenges brought about by dwindling national income from falling oil price and other factors”.
He told newsmen, “as you can see, we are conducting ourselves peacefully as directed by our parent bodies. We are calling on these Discos to revert to the status quo because the increase in tariff at this time‎ is misplaced and will affect Nigerians a lot whose income has already nose-dived”.
None of the JED management staff in Bauchi office was available for comment at the time of the company’s picketing.
