Ekiti Lawmakers decry activities of Herdsmen in South West

Members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly have expressed worry over reported activities of normadic cattle rearers in the South-Western part of the country, particularly Ekiti State.
According to a statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Speaker of the House, Stephen Gbadamosi, discussion of activities of the herdsmen in the state came up on the floor of the House on Thursday under Matter of Urgent Public Importance.
Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Hon. Aribisogan Olugboyega, who moved the motion under matter of Public Importance at the House plenary, called for urgent action to moderate the activities of the cattle rearers in view of the embarrassment and effect of their unholy activities across Ekitiland.
The motion, seconded by Hon. Akinleye Ekundayo was unanimously supported by members of the Assembly.
Hon Dele Fajemilehin, Wale Ayeni, Badejo Anifowose, Jeje Samuel and Akinniyi Sunday condemned the activities of the Fulani cattle rearers across the state.
They said the cattle rearers now indulged in destructions of farms and produce, robbery, molestation and rape of women during the cause of their grazing activities.
Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Kola Oluwawole agreed that the activities of the cattle rearers had affected not only farmers, but also the entire populace psychologically.
He said the government could not fold its arms and pretend that all was well and called for urgent action through proper legislation.
According to Hon. Adewale Ayeni, the herdsmen “believe that they are above the law, and in the process terrorise our constituents. We cannot continue to tolerate this problem. There should be a law to control their movement. We should also tell traditional rulers to identify and have records of strangers in their communities.”
Meanwhile, the Ekiti State College of Technical and Commercial Agriculture Repeal Bill (2015) was passed on the floor of the House, while the Assembly accepted, as its documents, four reports of the Committee on Public Petitions on various issues earlier referred to it.
According to the Chairman of the committee, Hon. Titilayo Owolabi-Akerele, the reports were on; “the allegation of wrongful termination of appointment of two staffers of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti; the allegation of wrongful termination of appointment of two staffers of the Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti; and the allegation of wrongful dismissal of three staffers from the service by the Ekiti State Civil Service Commission, Ado-Ekiti.”
She said the last was on allegation of wrongful dismissal/termination of appointment of six staffers of Ikogosi Warmspring Resort by the Resort Management.
