Senator Anietie Okon has expressed dismay over allegations from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against the Benue State Governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom on the embezzlement of N22billion, saying, the agency has spurred massive erosion from credible and trusted Nigerians
Okon, who is a former National Publicity Secretary of PDP, spoke in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital on Thursday.
He said that EFCC has disabused its constitutional mandates to do the biddings of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government to haunt credible Nigerians.
The former National Publicity Secretary, who also commented on the ongoing political crisis in Benue State where eight out of thirty lawmakers have served impeachment notice on Governor Ortom, advised the Presidency and security forces against destabilizing Nigeria’s democracy.
According to Senator Okon, “what is unfolding in Benue State is unconstitutional and devoid of any known legislative norms, practices and procedure” “The eight lawmakers are hit men of a gangster cartel led by Comrade Adams Oshomhole,” citizens are appalled by this crass exhibition of desperation” he highlighted.
Senator Okon explained, “What is expected from the lawmakers is to work in synergy with the Governor and members of executive to provide dividends of democracy to the people, “the interest of the people should remain paramount”.
The PDP chieftain urged Governor Ortom not to succumb to what he described as the ongoing “gangsterism” against his government but to continue in his heroic defence of the people of the state.
According to him, the Presidency and APC have resorted to using unpopular tactics where political engagements and dialogue are needed stressing that the President absolving himself belatedly from the ongoing “embarrassing hooliganism from the security agencies is mere face saving measures”.
He called on Benue people to remain solidly behind their Governor urging them not to flinch or surrender to the ongoing acts of intimidation and persecution because it is a mere passing phase in their history as a people.
His words, “We are all aware that the Governor is being buffeted today by clear acts of intimidation and mindless persecution. Citizens of the country are impaled by this crass exhibition of desperation. Beyond all, this is the well spell out deliberate course to trigger the breakdown of law and order as to create a condition for the abortion of our painfully constructed democratic order given his antecedents so that the constitution will be suspended”.
