Dry Season Farming: Committee Monitors Fertiliser Distribution

The committee set up by Katsina State Government for sales and distribution of fertilizer has embarked on rigorous monitoring exercise for the actualization of this year’s dry season farming in all the 34 local government areas of the
state.
           
The committee Chairman Alhaji Idris Usman Tune said government decides to maintain the subsidy despite the increase in prices stressing that irrigation farming support farmers in solving many problems.
           
Alhaji Tune who is also the permanent secretary of the state ministry of Agriculture said the government was selling the commodity at 2,500 naira for NPK, 2,700 for Urea.
            
He said after wet season farming, the best the farmers could do to break even was particularly engaging in dry season farming.
           
The State Fertilizer Committee Chairman said irrigation farming was being encouraged because it gives many farmers something to do.
           
The Permanent Secretary also acknowledged the water problems faced by Kankia irrigation farmers as a result of drying-up of their Dam.
           
Tune said the committee would forward the problem to the government to find a lasting solution to it.
           
The Chairman of Kankia Dam Irrigation Farmers Alhaji Ali Ya’u thanked the State Government for providing them with the commodity at a subsidized price.
           
He appealed for the dredging of the Dam to provide youth with an opportunity to stay at home and take care of themselves and stop rural-urban migration.
