The police in Ogun State have apprehended a medical doctor and a nurse for allegedly carrying out an abortion that resulted in the death of the patient.
The suspects identified as Dr. Olawale Raji and nurse Olusegun Funmilayo were said to have committed the act on July 26th 2018 in Atan area of the state.
According to report, they had assisted one Aminat Iyanda Atisola to abort her two months pregnancy, which led to her death.
It was reliably leanrt that trouble started for the 35 yr old lady as she suffered complications shortly after the abortion and she was rushed to the Federal Medical Center Abeokuta for treatment but died on the way.
Our correspondent gathered that the arrest of the suspects was consequent upon a complaint lodged by a sister to the deceased one Bose Kareem of No 6 Ireakari Street Atan Ota over the incident.
Ogun State Command Public Relations Officer DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi,who confirmed the arrest in a release made available to journalists, said the suspects who work in a private hospital, carried out the unlawful act right inside the house of the deceased.
According to Oyeyemi, the DPO Onipanu Division SP Sangobiyi Johnson on receiving the report, led his team of detectives to the scene where the two medical practitioners were promptly arrested.
The release reads, ” Police in Ogun state on the 26th of July arrested one Dr, Olawale Raji and a nurse Olusegun Funmilayo for carrying out an abortion that led to the death of one Aminat Iyanda Atisola.
Their arrest followed a complaint from the the sister of the deceased one Bose Kazeem f’ of no 6, ireakari St Atan Ota who reported that her deceased sister was two months pregnant and contracted the service of the two suspects who are working in a private hospital for the abortion of the pregnancy.
She stated further that the suspects carried out the unlawful act right inside the house of the deceased.
Trouble started when the deceased started having complications shortly after the abortion and she was rushed to the Federal Medical Center Abeokuta for treatment but died on the way.
On receiving the report, the DPO onipanu division SP sangobiyi Johnson led his team of detectives to the scene where the two medical practitioners were promptly arrested.
The corpse of the 35yr old deceased has been deposited at the general hospital morgue for post mortem examination”.
Th police image maker further stated that the Commissioner of Police CP Ahmed Iliyasu has ordered that the suspects be transferred to Homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for proper investigation and prosecution.
He equally warned that abortion remains an unlawful act and whoever is caught engaging in it without any medical justification will have the law of the land to contend with.
The CP further appealed to members of the public to always seek lawful professional advice on any health related issue.
