Deaf Teachers Want “repositioning” of the Education sector

The Annual National Conference of Deaf Teachers has advocated for the repositioning of the country educational system to meet the desired challenges in the sector.
National President of Deaf Teachers Association, Dr. Olaniyi Temitope stated this during the just concluded annual conference of the teachers held in Jos.
He underscored the need for the government at all levels to ensure functional and qualitative as well as purposeful education.
The conference with a theme: “Contemporary State Of Deaf Education in Nigeria, Challenges And The Way Forward, according to him, the approach “is apt and timely especially at this point in time when efforts are on to reposition our educational system to achieve the desire aims and objectives”.
Deputy Dean at the University of Jos, Professor of special education, Isuwa Jurmang emphasised the role of sign language to both Deaf and hearing public.
He hammered on contemporary issues affecting the nation’s educational policies on deaf education in the country.
An erudite scholar from the University of Gallaudet in Washington D C, Professor Simon Ishaya Guteng, who is also a deaf in diaspora, recommended for change on how language ideology impacted on deaf education.
He wants a complete orientation of Nigerians and hearing people’s perspectives on the deaf people.
According to him, it is wrong that Nigerians allow hearing individuals to control everything even when they lack the understanding of deaf language.
He opined for holistic change on the policies of Education of the deaf and teaching curriculum in Nigeria.
