Relevant stakeholders in Daura Local Government Area of Katsina State have been called upon to join hands and ensure attainment of open defecation free (ODF) status in the area.

This is to enable the local government to join the 24 other local government areas that have already achieved the status in an effort towards making the entire state open defecation free to meet the Sustainable Development Goals in sanitation.

The Executive Director of Katsina State Rural Water Supply and Sanitations Agency (RUWASSA), Engineer Aminu Dayyabu Safana made the call when the agency’s management paid an advocacy visit to the local government chairman in his office.

The visit was to intimate the local council about the ongoing preparations for revalidation of the local government area as open defecation free and to solicit  support and co-operation of all the stakeholders in the area towards achieving the objectives.

Engineer Aminu Safana told the Chairman that the ODF revalidation exercise was being carried out by the Clean Nigeria Campaign of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources with the collaboration of RUWASSA.

He pointed out that the programme which entails construction, ownership and proper usage of latrine as well as avoidance of open defecation would ensure significance reduction in water sanitation and hygiene related disease as already manifested in the areas that have attained the status.

The RUWASSA Executive Director then promised to provide all necessary technical assistance to the Local Government for success of the programme.

Responding, the Daura Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Bala Musa assured the readiness of the Council to lead the ODF validation process through provision of logistics and mobilization of all stakeholders in the area to accept the programme.

He commended the agency and all its partners for the special interest given to Daura Local Government Area for the exercise.
