The Federal Operations Unit, Zone “A” Ikeja Lagos of the Nigeria Customs Service has apprehended 10 suspects over their alleged involvement in the importation of contraband and false declaration between June 13th to July 24th 2018.
Also, it recovers a total sum of Six Seven Million, Three Hundred and Seventy Five Thousand, Six Hundred and Seventy Naira Five Kobo (N67,375,670.5) under the period in review.
Controller of the Unit, Comptroller Mohammed Uba made the disclosure in a press release made available to journalists in Lagos.
The comptroller stated that the suspects were arrested in connection with the 143 seizures recorded by the Unit under the period in review.
He disclosed that two containers were impounded by the Unit for allegedly carrying prohibited imported items worth millions of naira.
According to him, one of the containers measuring 1/40ft no PCIU922650/8 was seized for carrying 525 bales of second hand clothing as against used motorcycles declared in the SGD.
The second one, also measuring 1/40ft with no PCIU 871664/5, was seized for carrying 11 jumbo bales of jeans, 365 cartons of new slippers, 145 cartons of new bagsaa against adhesive dressing declared in the SGD.
Uba noted that the act was a clear case of false declaration, saying it is tantamount to seizure.
He informed that investigation has commenced into the  case, adding that anyone culpable will face the full wrath of the law.
The Comptroller expressed dismay over the incessant attacks on operatives of the Unit, vowing that they are determined to defend themselves at all times.
Uba warned that any one that dares the officers in the course of discharging their lawful duty risk a suicide mission.
According to the Unit would not tolerate the excesses of the smugglers and their accomplice.
” I  also wish to advise the general public not to allow themselves to be used as shield by smugglers most especially the host communities. No amount of resistance from the smugglers  and their mob accomplices will deter us from performing our statutory responsibilities in all aspects especially in Anti- smuggling operations within southwest zone”, the Comptroller warned.
Uba expressed appreciation to other security agencies such as the Nigerian Army and the Police for rendering the necessary support in towards the Unit’s anti smuggling drive.
