Following directives, the Adamawa /Taraba Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over seized goods to the IDPs in Adamawa State.
Area Comptroller of the command, Comptroller Adetoye Francis handed over the seized smuggled items to the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) at the weekend in Yola.
According to him, the exercise was in compliance with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to alleviate the sufferings of IDPs in the country.
Francis maintained that in line with the presidential order,authorities of the NSC had decided that all seized smuggled items in the country be given to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs camps,
“The Comptroller General of Customs said I should hand over these items to you for onward distribution to IDPs in the state,” Francis said.
The items comprised 1,648 bags of foreign rice, seven bags of maize and 642 cartons of Cameroon soap.
Receiving the items, the Executive Secretary of ADSEMA, Mr Haruna Furo, commended the gesture of the NCS, adding that it will go a long way in assisting the IDPs.
He said the agency would distribute the items to IDPs in camps and returnees in the seven local government areas affected by insurgency in the state.
Furo also pledged to ensure judicious and equitable distribution of the items to the IDPs.
