The Comptroller-General of Customs(CGC), Hameed Ali, has directed the Area comptrollers to grant Senate Ad Hoc Committee access to the organization’s warehouses across the country.
This was disclosed by Joseph Attah,the Public Relations Officer
PRO) of the Nigeria Customs Service when the Ad Hoc Committee visited to intimate him about the commencement of the warehouses’ inspection throughout the country.
Attah confirmed the CGC’s willingness to cooperate with the Ad Hoc Committee confirming that the CGC emphasized on the customs service openness and that Area Comptrollers have been ordered to grant the committee access to the warehouses as well as to provide answers to all questions.
The spokesman expressed dismay over some news reports alleging that the CGC walked out on the committee when members visited the headquarters, arguing that his boss is out to protect the nation’s interest.
Attah said the committee visited Karu and FCT Commands of the Customs service to detect if food items were wasted as alleged by some people. He explained that the service has been adhering to the presidential directive that seized food items should be given to Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) who are victims of insurgency in the Northeast.
The PRO further confirmed that the service has so far distributed 252,466 bags of rice and over 80,000 Jerry cans of vegetable oil,soap,ladies wears and shoes.
The National logistics committee accompanied by some senators handled the distribution to various IDP camps, Attah assured.
