Benin Monarch, HRM Oba Ewuare II, has described culture and tradition as major promoters of peace and security in any society.
The Benin Monarch stated this when he received in his Palace a delegation from the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria led by the Secretary of the Council, Alhaji Umoru Jafaru.
The Oba of Benin stressed the need for people to respect African culture and tradition, which he said has been used to promote peace and security right from the Pre-Colonial Era.
The Omo N’Oba pointed out that things started to change with the coming of the Colonialists and Modern Civilization, which has resulted in anti-social behavior prevalent among the people.
Oba Ewuare II while commending the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria for the plan to organize cultural festival to sensitize Nigerians on the need for them to embrace peace, however advised against paying lip service to culture and tradition.
The Benin Monarch disclosed that he would always support any plan that will promote culture and tradition, and agreed in principle to support the proposed cultural festival by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria pending when he would receive a formal proposal to that effect.
Earlier, Secretary of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Alhaji Umoru Jafaru who was accompanied by the Ima of Somorika said they were in the Palace to inform the Oba of Benin about the proposed cultural festival and seek for Royal blessings and support.
Alhaji Jafaru told the Benin Monarch and Palace Chiefs present that the National Cultural Festival for Peace and security is being proposed to take place between 27th and 29thNovember, this year to sensitize Nigerians on the need to embrace peace as well as showcasing Nigeria’s rich culture and tradition.
