CRSG at loggerhead with CAN over morning devotion in schools

A cold war is currently brewing between the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Cross River chapter and the state government over the decision of the later to ban morning devotion in all public and private schools in the state.
A letter signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Anne Odey, had directed all Principals and head teachers of secondary and primary schools in the state to suspend all assemblies (morning and afternoon) till further notice.
But in a swift reaction, the state CAN Chairman, Archbishop Joseph Ukpo who described the directive as unacceptable noted that it will affect the moral upbringing of school children in the state.
Archbishop Ukpo whose opinion was contained in a statement, lamented that such directive by the government clearly negates freedom of worship and should be withdrawn immediately.
According to the statement, “Sequel to the letter from the Ministry of Education with reference No MOE/S.132/VOL.1 Cross River State directing Public and Private/Secondary across the state to suspend all assemblies (morning and afternoon) in the state is totally unacceptable.
We call on the government of the state to immediately withdraw that directive as it negates freedom of worship and it will negatively affect the moral upbringing of our children”.
