Court Sentences NURTW Member To 25 Yrs Imprisonment Over Death Of 500 Level ABU Medical Student

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan on Friday sentenced a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state, Akinwumi Adisa to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour.
Justice Munta Abimbola, in his judgment however discharged and acquitted four others namely Olumide Oladeji, Sadeeq Adejide and Tajudeen Arowotosuna.
The NURTW members were standing trial for conspiracy and murder of Anwal Bala Shannon, a 500 level medical student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on June 4, 2011 during a bloody clash between NURTW factions in Ibadan.
In his judgment, Justice Abimbola discharged and acquitted the 2nd, 3rd and 4th accused persons on the ground that there was nothing linking them to the mayhem or the scene.
The 1st accused who told the court that he was at the scene of incidence on the day of the bloody clash but denied participating was sentenced to 25years jail terms
It will be recalled that on the night of the 4th June, 2011 at about 9:30pm, factional members of the Union in a struggle to take over the control of Iwo Road motor park from the another faction shot sporadically into the crowd killing Anwal Bala Shannon, a 500 level medical student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the President of the Medical Student Association of Nigeria, .
The late Anwal Bala Shannon was in company of his colleagues who were returning from a programme at Osogbo to take a bus to Zaria at the Iwo-road Motor Park when he was shot.
The first, second and third accused person were arrested at the scene of the crime while the fourth was later arrested by men of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
