Colleges Of Education Gear Up For Strike, Alert Zonal Delegates

Mr. Smart Olugbeko, National President of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has sensitized zonal delegates of the union over the  proposed nationwide strike and the planned National Executive Council Meeting slated for March.

Olugbeko while briefing newsmen shortly after their Zonal meeting at Federal College of Education (FCE), Zaria, said the meeting was to keep the congress abreast on the lingering issues between the Federal Government and the union.

“We are here to sensitize the congress on the efforts we have taken so far, what the government has promised and how far the government has gone to fulfill such promises.

“If government reneges on its promise, there is likelihood that the union would initiate the permissible trade union act that allows us to take further action,’’ he said.

Olugbeko said the union has not arrived at a date for the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting which is billed for March.

“By the time we meet in March, the principal officers of the union will present issues to the meeting.

“But we wouldn’t know between now and then if the government would have done something tangible that might not make the NEC take industrial action.

The President said as of now they have not heard from the government and they have already made their position known to them and  they expect that before then they will get a response; if not, NEC will take final decision on that,’’ he said.

Mr.Olugbeko congratulated the congress of Federal College of Education Zaria on the appointment of the Provost and the appointment of the Chairman of the Union as the Deputy Please of the College.

“For us in the union the appointment denotes a synergy between the union and the management of the Federal College of Education Zaria,’’ he said.

It could be recalled that on Feb. 16, the Union threatens the union through its National Officers’ Council (NOC)\ frowned at the aloofness of the Federal Government to the Colleges of Education sub-sector,

The union said it will in the next few weeks mobilise its National Executive Council (NEC) to take necessary actions as permissible by the Trade Union Act if the government failed to do the needful.
