Calling For Reopening Of Borders For Food Importation Unpatriotic — IAR Director

The Executive Director, Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR/ABU) Zaria, Professor Muhammad Faguji Ishiyaku has said, that it is unpatriotic thinking to call for the reopening of our borders for food importation.

Professor Faguji Ishiyaku who stated this in an exclusive interview with journalists in Zaria on the flood that affected many farms in some part of the country.

He said the reopening of borders will not  help the situation, instead it will worsen and discourage the farmers to go back to  farming.

The agricultural expert advised the government to as a matter of urgency to prepare a solution that will cushion the effects of the flooding.

He also called on the government to use the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme to assist the farmers in the affected flooded communities so that they will not be discouraged in the farming production.

According to the director, the institute has developed early maturing varieties of seed which will complement the flooding problems in the affected areas.

Professor Faguji Ishiyaku said, IAR has developed maize, cowpea drought and flood tolerant and very soon the Sorghum variety will be out to farmers.

They advised government to construct earth dams in the affected communities, which will assist farmers when any  natural disaster occurs, as some disaster management agencies  predicted.

They also advised for the take off of the National Policy on Agricultural Production, which can leverage on improvement of technology, including mechanical that will improve agricultural production in the country.
