The National Association of Nigerian Students has called for an independent investigation into alleged cases of funds diversion in the National Assembly.
The call was made by Senate Secretariat of the association through a press statement signed by the President-elect, Oyejide Salam.
The students’ body also‎ asked the speaker of the House of Representative, Yakubu Dogara to resign over allegation of budget paddling.
Salam explained that thorough investigation would help to build public trust in the national assembly. He added, “It is a great disappointment that scarce funds that should be used to develop key sectors such as education, health, security and reviving of Nigerian Economy in these trying times were systematically allocated to non-existing projects with the sole aim of converting such into personal use in the nearest future.
“The Senate Secretariat of NANS use this medium to call for an independent investigative committee to look into this issue of budget padding in the National Assembly so as to forestall such in the future and call for resignation of Mr. Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara.‎”
He expressed displeasure ‎over alleged corruption cases in the Nigeria National Assembly, saying it was affecting the growth of Nigeria. Salam, who is a student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, described the allegation of budget paddling as a betrayal of trust and high handedness.  ‎
He said, “We will not tolerate any act of corruption either in the upper or lower chambers of the legislative arm of government of Federal Republic of Nigeria.” Nigerians have been engulfed with the issue of budget padding in the last couple of months, this clearly shows the level of high handedness, betrayal of trust and self seeking enrichment of National Assembly members.
