Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has once again emphasized that the state cannot afford to provide land for grazing of cattle.
He stated this while granting an interview to Channels TV on Sunday at the Government House, Makurdi, adding that Benue people do not have land elsewhere to farm on, wondering why suggestions of taking away their land should even arise.
According to him, an alternative to grazing of cattle is available to the country and should be adopted.
“I have said time and again that Benue does not have enough land for farming and grazing of cattle at the same time. Our people do not have land elsewhere for agriculture so when they are constantly chased away from their farms by herdsmen, in addition to the loss of innocent lives, the sad trend is affecting food production, leading to hunger and causing poverty in the state.
“This country has a reliable alternative and that alternative is ranching of cattle,” he explained.
