Acting Governor of Bauchi State, Engr. Nuhu Gidado has challenged the 17th Quarterly meeting of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and States Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) in the country to come up with far reaching policies that will uplift the standard of education to make life meaningful, especially for future generation of Nigerians.
The Acting Governor who doubles as the State’s Commissioner for Education lamented the complete dilapidation of schools and the sorry state of education in the state when his administration assumed office in 2015.
Engr. Nuhu Gidado was speaking when the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Gozie Anwuka led Chairmen of the Universal Basic Education Commission and the 36 States Universal Basic Education Boards and Abuja paid him courtesy call at the Bauchi Government House Tuesday.
Gidado assured the minister and his entourage of Bauchi state’s commitment to fully implement all policies formulated to transform the education sector which, he said, the Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar-led administration holds dearly.
The Acting Governor who described the sector in the state as ‘almost nonexistent’, said however that with prioritization of education with 20% of the state’s 2016 budget and the appointment of the Deputy Governor to superintend over the affairs of the Ministry of Education, the ugly state of education is gradually being reversed.
Gidado explained that education is by the administration of Governor Mohammed Abubakar accorded basically as the bedrock of any societal living, stressed the administration’s resolve to overhaul the sector, especially the negative attitude of its critical stakeholders.
He said that poor state of education necessitated the government to embark on capacity training for teachers who had not undergone any training for decades and intensive management training for over 700 School Based Management Committees members from different schools in parts of the state.
Engr. Nuhu Gidado told the minister that from 2015 when the present administration in the state took oath of office, no policy issues on education was ever put down by Governor Mohammed Abubakar.
Gidado stated that due to the adequate attention the present administration in the state pays to the provision of security of life and property, Bauchi has remained more peaceful than all states in the northeast, resulting in the influx of nearly 3 million people fleeing the insurgency to the state.
The Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Gozie Anwuka had earlier told the Acting Governor that the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) with 36 States’ Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) 17th Quarterly meeting in Bauchi was to discuss pertinent issues that affect education at the basic level with a view to proffering possible solutions to the problems bedeviling the sector.
While appreciating the hospitality of Bauchi State to them, Minister recalled that Bauchi volunteered while planning which state is ready to host the meeting, assuring that the meeting will deliberate on the most critical issues that affect education at the basic level.
