Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade has issued an ultimatum for the release of their salaries to the state local government workers.
He directed those saddled with the responsibility of payment of the salaries ensure that the outstanding two months salaries are paid between September 7, and September 8, 2016.
Ayade in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Chief Press Secretary, blamed the delay in the payment of salaries to the local government workers on the on-going biometric exercise, which he decried has dragged on for too long.
“This biometric exercise has gone on for too long, on account of which the workers have had their salaries withheld. The workers have suffered enough and I cannot let this to continue. I will rather pay a ghost worker than let the workers continue to suffer because of the exercise”, the statement quoted the governor.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had earlier protested the non payment of salaries of local government workers and issued an ultimatum for a strike if its demands were not met.
Labour had demanded for the payment of gratuity to retirees amongst others too.
