The National body of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has asked Governor Rauf Aregbesola to immediately reinstate all the sacked 139 academic staff in the Polytechnics and Monotechnics in the state.
ASUP at a press conference held at the Federal College of Animal Health and Production, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, addressed by its Vice President Mr. Timothy Ogunseye , Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Olawale Adetunji, Osun State ASUP Chairman, Mr. Omisore Adedokun urged Governor Aregbesola to be prepared for a serious industrial unrest if he failed to reinstate the sacked workers.
According to the union, it was unfortunate that despite that, the state government had refused to remit 33-month deduction‎s to the union, 24 academic staff were sacked in the Polytechnic, Iree; 15 at Esa Oke; 72 at the College of Education, Ila; 28 at the College of Education, Ilesa, and 44 non academic staff at Iree.
ASUP however advised Governors Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State to reconsider their stand on the ‘amputated’ salary payment adopted by their states since last year.
He added that ASUP had made several moves to correct the perceived anomaly adding “as at present, we have approached the court, met the Houses of Assembly to complain that the culture of amputated payment was alien to both Polytechnics and Monotechnics.
The ASUP leader pointed out that the government paid full salary last in June 2015 and since July last year, and had been paying 50 per cent of their salaries.
Commenting on the imposition of University Professors ‎on the Polytechnics instead of picking from quantum of suitably qualified candidates within the Polytechnics, he said, “It is on record that on many occasions, Professors from the university system were appointed to run the affairs of the Polytechnic institutions”.
ASUP then cautioned that as the tenure of the Rector of the Polytechnic, Offa had expired in November 2015 and Acting Rector appointed, the substantive Rector should be selected from the Polytechnic systems adding that anybody picked from the Polytechnic systems would perform better.
