ASF France, Urges Stakeholders To Speak Out On Human Rights Violations

As human rights violations continue to persist in the country,  Avocats Sans Frontieres (ASF France) otherwise known as Lawyers Without Borders have sensitized stakeholders in a roundtable discussion to speak out  on violations of human rights in kaduna.

According to ASF France, that speaking out will help end the violence, torture, arbitrary detention, ill-treatment and extra-judicial killings by security agencies.

It would be recalled that, a 3 days training was held targeting personnel of the various security agencies, including the Police, the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp, DSS, NDLEA, EFCC, Nigerian Immigration Service, Corrections Service and Kaduna State Vigilante Service.

In her welcome remarks, the Head of Office of ASF France in Nigeria, Mrs Angela Uwandu, explained that the round table meeting which  was aimed at advocating for strengthening of the rule of law and, particularly of the right to a fair trial.

The stakeholders at the meeting berated torture as a means to obtaining information especially from suspects, adding that there is no justification for torture.

It was also noted that section 3 of the anti – torture act (2017) stated that there is no exceptional circumstances, whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification for torture.

According to the section of the act, secret detention places, solitary confinement, incommunicado or other similar forms of detention, where torture may be carried on are prohibited.

In his remarks, the moderator of the meeting, Sherrif Ndasule explained that the expectations of Nigerians from security agencies in addressing Human Rights violations in the state are high.

The meeting also resolved that stakeholders should follow up on the outcome of the Panel of enquiry set up in Kaduna State after the #ENDSARS protest.
