Stakeholders working as mediators in Kaduna State, on Thursday resolved to work in synergy with each other in helping people to resolve disputes without them having to go to follow all court procedures by

sing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).They observed that the reason people go to court is to get settlement for their disputes, which usual takes a longer time and financial costs.
The meeting was organized by The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC), Kaduna State branch to foster collaboration and synergy among mediators across the state.
The stakeholders also noted that it is important that lawyers especially should take advantage and be trained as mediators, so they can be helping their clients to resolve certain issues without allowing them go to

ourt,using ADR.
They therefore, called for sensitization of lawyers and other professionals interested in working as mediators so they can acquire the required skills on how to mediate in revolving issues without taking them to court, which they said, would earn them more respect from their clients and community.
The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC), is a body of dispute resolution practitioners with the mandate to regulate the practice of Mediation, train prospective Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practitioners, and encourage organizations and institutions to adopt Mediation and Conciliation as the primary mechanisms for resolving disputes.
Addressing the stakeholders, Chairperson of ICMC, Kaduna branch, Barr. Bukola Ajao, noted that the meeting was born out of the fact that there are different stakeholders in Kaduna working as mediators yet, there are no synergy and collaborations.
“When you look at all these stakeholders, one thing is common with all of us; the fact that we resolve disputes, but are we aware with the existence of some of these organizations?
“The good thing about collaboration is that it makes our work easier and put less stress on us. We can share our work loads and responsibilities when we collaborate. Barr. Ajao said.
She revealed that the institute by April, will be launching a program call Volunteers Mediation Scheme (VMS), where indigent people can be assisted with small claims, people like; market women, landlords and tenants issues can be resolved for free, adding “Also we are having clinic days when people can come in and also settlement week, where we plan to do road show, media talks etc.”
She appreciated the stakeholders for coming and agreeing to work together, adding “this is just the beginning of our collaboration and we hope to we do better.”
Stakeholders present at the meeting includes: Chief Judge of Kaduna State, Ministry of Human Services and Social Development, Kaduna Peace Commission, Public Complaint Commission, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Multi Door Court House, Religious bodies. Others are, Departments and Agencies of Government, Members and fellows of ICMC, etc.
