Association of Tsangaya proprietors of Nigeria has expressed concern over the high rates of Almajiri’s roaming the street in some northern states
The National Chairman of the Association, Alaramma Abdullahi Abubakar told newsmen in Bauchi that the association will look into the possibility of sponsoring a bill in the National Assembly on the need to prohibit street begging in the country.
Abubakar decried the way and manner Almajiri’s were being maltreated by their teachers, saying the association would take drastic measures to overcome the ugly trend.
He noted with dismay the way and manner Almajiri’s were roaming the street, begging in motor parks and filling stations, and solicited the support of other key players to contain the situation.
According to him, part of the measures is to provide school uniforms to all registered Tsangaya schools, stressing that the association would soon commence registration and census of Tsangaya teachers and their pupils nationwide.
The association Chairman called on governments at all level, philanthropists and other stakeholders to come to the aid of Tsangaya education system.
Alaramma therefore advised for the handing over of about two hundred existing Tsangaya model schools established by the federal government to the association for smooth operation.
He also counseled the federal and state governments to establish Tsangaya Education Trust Fund, considering the significant role religious organizations play in nation building and societal development.
