As clamoured for by people of Akwa Ibom state for creation of more clans and villages in the state, the House of Assembly has passed a resolution mandating the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to conduct public hearings in the three Senatorial Districts of the state on the matter.
The Speaker of the House, Mr. Onofiok Luke who read the resolution of the House, said that the Committee which is expected to submit its findings to the House within three weeks was also expected to consider the collation of the issues of population of the various interest groups.
Look at the existing clans and villages that were not given recognition by the state government as required by law and the need to create more clans and villages based on the inputs and contributions of the stakeholders so as to give all sections of the state a sense of belonging.
The resolution of the House followed a motion moved by the Member representing Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Mr. Ime Okon and seconded by the Member representing Itu, Mr. Idongesit Ituen on the “Need for the Governor to Direct Holistic Review of the Clans and Villages of the State”.
Accordingly, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Mmandu Umoren was authorised to communicate the resolution of House to Governor Udom Emmanuel for appropriate action just as the Attorney-General has been urged to commence a review of the laws of Akwa Ibom State for amendments as may be necessary.
