The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources has vowed to end the activities of farmers engaged in planting low farm seedlings.
Mr. Agboola Adebayo, Director, National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC), stated this Monday, in Asaba, during the opening ceremony of a sensitization programme for cash crop farmers.
Mr. Adebayo, who represented the DG of NASC, said the council stands as a regulatory body for the seed industry in Nigeria, stressing that the body has dealers who produces the seeds.
According to him, the body serves as police in the seed industry, stressing that the seed inspectorate department prosecute, Sensitizes and educate key players in the industry.
He revealed that some set of farmers in Kano state 3 years ago were arrested and were prosecuted and fine to the tone of N250, 000, adding that a bill to amend the old law has been sent and awaiting president Muhammadu Buhari’s assent, which stipulates about N3 million fine for offenders.
He also noted that the sensitization programmes which includes a road walk, is aimed at eliminating fake marketers just as he charged the regional director to make available security personnel as they go about the “Seed Market Sensitization”.
