A 6.4 magnitude earthquake on Monday, pounded southern Turkey, the second in less than eight weeks, destroying homes and sending fears across a wide area in the Northern city of Latakiya.

Scores of families are feared to have been trapped under rubbles of the earthquake.

The new tremor occured at exactly 20:04 local time, according to authorities in Latakiya in Hatay province.

The latest quake destroyed buildings and bridges left standing by the January 6 double quake.

Reports added that gullies that were hitherto narrow are now wide with fears that trapped and injured victims may die if not rescued in pristine time.

United States Geological Survey reported that the shockwaves of this new earthquake were felt in far away Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Syria, adding that the devastating effects may not be severe as the January’s which killed over 45,000 people with more bodies still being recovered from underneath the rubbles.

Rescue efforts from the earlier quake were yet to wind down in both Turkiye and Syria where miraculous recoveries of people alive were being made.

The latest was a nine-year-old girl plucked alive from the rubble.

Even though the little girl lost her both parents in the quake, the world would have a cheering news worth celebrating amidst a disaster which sent thousands of lives to their early graves.

Authorities in Ankara which was yet to recover from the shock of the earlier quake is being awaited for official statements concerning the latest natural disaster.
