No where in Nigeria has the Super Eagles got this huge support ever from fans, with incredible calmness and orderliness like in Kaduna on Friday during their AFCON qualifiying match with the Pharaohs of Egypt, Amaju Pinik has said.
The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President made this claim Friday night during a dinner held in Government House, Kaduna, organised by the State Government to honour the national team after their game.
Pinick said the sight of fans who feeled the Stadium to the brim was so scary that he was frantically on the phone to the Minister of Youth and Sport, the Inspector General of Police almost every ten minutes pleading for reinforcement of security to avert the untoward.
He said a mere invasion of the field by the fans out of excitement or otherwise would have earned the NFF a punitive cost of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000). That, he said would have been a slap on the wrist compared to the safety of the players which worried him seriously.
He promised that the NFF will return to Kaduna again and again as the “crocodile city has become a home for the Eagles and foorball generally”.
Speaking about the Pharaohs, Pinik said they “over estimated the Egyptians but now we know they are nothing”. He added that winning comes in varied forms “and we won today”.
Also in his remark, Coach Samson Siasia said “this is a new Super Eagles”. He decried the dearth of fair play asserting that “fair play is no more fair play”apparantly making reference to the equalising goal scored by Egyptian Salah in offside position.
He assured that if the Eagles play in Egypt as they did in Kaduna Friday, victory will be theirs.
On his part, Captain of the team, John Mikel Obi said “we have not lost yet and hope to get the point in Egypt”. He paid tribute to their fans and the mammoth crowd in Kaduna that trooped out to cheer them.
