The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige has charged tertiary graduates in the country to be employers of Labour by acquiring skills necessary to be self-reliant rather than wait for white collar jobs that are not forthcoming.
He said in view of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cardinal policies on skills acquisition and employment generation, his ministry is committed to improving the technical skills and efficiency of artisans and craftsmen in both public and private sector so as to meet up with modern technology.
Senator Ngige who stated this at the graduation of the 12th set of trainees of Skill Upgrade/Training Centre of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment in Bauchi Thursday, explained that there is need for improved access to modern technology, increased utilization of machines and knowledge in the use of modern technologies if Nigerians are to find and keep decent jobs.
The Minister who was represented by the Director Skill’s Development and Acquisition, Ibrahim Jibiya said while gainful employment is of paramount importance to workers especially Artisans and craftsmen, the need for self-reliance and self-sustaining ventures should be given every support and encouragement.
“For this reason, my ministry has over the years paid serious attention to this and other training centres so that more and more products of these centres can become self-reliant and also most probably become employers of Labour”. He stated
According to the Minister, the Bauchi Centre will be used in training civilian JTF and the internally displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast sub-region to acquire skills.
In his address, the Principal of the Centre, Jatau Gbokiss said the centre has graduated 4,187 students in various skills since its inception in 2009, saying the graduands are now well established entrepreneurs who are now employers of labour.
Gbokiss added that the centre is involved in training students on how to manage and organize small scale businesses, as it is also in need of more emerging trades that are in demand by the public who have shown interest in these areas.
