ABU has not built new hostel in 40 years, to graduate 17,747 Sat – VC

The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Garba has called on the Federal Government to immediately addressed the issue of limitation of admitting students in tertiary institutions due to accommodation problems by building more hostels to accommodate them.
He made the call during a media charts on the activities line up for the 38th Convocation ceremony which comes up on Saturday.
He said ABU Zaria for the last 40 years has not build a single hostel that can help in alleviating accommodation problems for the students and even admit more.
Professor Garba also revealed that the University currently has 40,000 students with only 11,000 accommodated on campus due to lack of hostel.
 
According to him in 2015/16 session, 30,000 applications were received but only 10,000 could be admitted.
 
On the convocation ceremony, the Vice Chancellor announced that Alhaji Aliko Dangote will be the Guest Lecturer at the pre-convocation lecture on Friday and Emir of Kano Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II will be the Chairman of the occasion.
 
The convocation ceremony comes up on Saturday 30 January, 2016 with President Muhammadu Buhari expected to be the Special Guest of Honour.
 
The Vice Chancellor said the University will not be awarding honourary honours to anybody as was the case in the past.
 
A total of 13, 149 Undergraduate and 4, 598 Postgraduates will graduate at the convocation ceremony for the 2014/2015 and 2016 graduation.
