The Africa Leadership Group (ALG) has called for urgent need to prioritize environmental safeguards and sustainable development practices in Nigeria and across Africa following the devastating flood that wrecked havoc in Borno State.

Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, President, ALG in a statement on Wednesday, while commiserating with people of Maiduguri, noted that implementing climate resilience strategies and to work toward a sustainable environmental framework that ensures the safety and well-being of all citizens have become imperative for governments and all stakeholders.

According to him, “As climate change continues to increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events like flooding, it is crucial that we address these
environmental challenges with foresight and commitment.

“The Africa Leadership Group advocates for proactive measures that include better flood control infrastructure, sustainable urban planning, reforestation, and enhanced early-warning systems to protect lives and property in the future.”

ALG expressed its deepest sympathy to the government and people of Borno State, saying “we are heartbroken by the destruction of homes, farmlands, and infrastructure, as well as the displacement of families and tragic loss of lives caused by this natural disaster.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected communities during this time of immense difficulty.

“The flood has impacted some of the most vulnerable populations in Maiduguri, compounding the
already significant challenges the state faces. ALG stands in solidarity with the people of Borno and supports ongoing relief efforts aimed at providing immediate assistance to the victims.”

He commended the ongoing efforts of Borno’s government, first responders, and humanitarian
organizations in their tireless work to bring relief to affected areas.

“ALG is committed to contributing
to these efforts by promoting long-term solutions that address the root causes of environmental
degradation and climate vulnerability.

“As we mourn with the people of Borno, we also urge a collective approach to building a safer and
more resilient future for the state and the continent at large.” Pastor Ighodalo, said.
