Management of the University of Ibadan on Saturday, ordered students of the university to proceed on a three weeks break few hours after the students staged protest against hike in their tuition fees.
According to an internal memo released by the institution, the decision followed a meeting between the university authorities and the Students Union Government (SUG).
The memo signed by the University Registrar, G.O Saliu stressed that with the break ” it is expected to give students enough time to complete their registration and also prepare for their first semester examination, which will start on Monday, September 23.
It stated that the students are to leave the halls of residence by 2:00p m. on Saturday
New Nigerian recalled that the Students on Friday staged protest around the institution’s campus over hikes in their tuition by the University management.
During the protest, the students since in the early hours of the day blocked the main entrance in the University campus preventing vehicles from entering as well as moving out of the campus.
The protesting students were kicking against the increase in the tuition as approved by the University Senate at its meeting on Thursday.
Displaying placards having inscriptions such as, “We say no tuition hikes” “The management is insensitive to our plights, “Our parents cannot afford the new hikes”, the students insisted that academic activity would be put on hold until the management rescind its decision on the tuition fees increase.
With the newly approved tuition,
students of the Department of Human Nutrition are now to pay N138, 350 as against N58,000 they paid in the last session.
At the Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, the students are now to be paying N150,000 as against N70,000 paid for the 2022/2023 session.
Already, a body, the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) in a statement has kicked against the increase in the tuition fee by the University of Ibadan Management.
