At least 61 women died of complications during child birth at various health facilities in Bauchi state betweenAugust and Decemeber;  the last six months of 2015.
This was the data captured by the National Technical Advisory Evidence for Action (E4A) and presented to a one day meeting organized by Bauchi State Accountability Mechanism for Maternal, Newborn and Child health (BaSAM) Action Plan 2016 Development held in Bauchi.
E4A Advisor, Mr. Oko Igado while presenting 2015 Bauchi Maternal Death Record scorecard expressed worry over the alarming rate of maternal death in Bauchi State, stressing that no woman should die while giving birth.
According to him, 28 maternal deaths were recorded from August to September 2015 while 33 women died from October to December 2015.
He said the report indicated that 11 women died of anaemia in pregnancy, 14 died of eclampsia, while APH killed 18 women and 9 women died as a result of PPH.
Igado lamented the inability of some health facilities to review maternal death, saying only 6 health facilities out of 25 secondary health facilities in the state reviewed maternal death
“It’s very important to review the maternal death, that is to investigate why the women are dying while giving birth so that we can know what action to take in order to prevent further death”, he said.
“If no action was taken to prevent maternal death, more women will die and we must not allow this to continue because the lives of the women are worth saving”.
On the 16% allocated to the health sector by the Bauchi State Government in the 2016 budget, Igado commended BASAM for their effort in convincing the government for the huge allocation.
He urged BASAM to put in more action to ensure timely release of the budget as well as effective implementation of health programmes in the state.
In his remarks, Bauchi State Mamaye Evidence 4 Action Coordinator, Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed in a remark gave objective of the meeting as to develop a work plan on the timely release of the 2016 budget to stakeholders in health sector for implementation of programs.
Ahmed stressed the need for government to engage officials to be pro-active in programme implementation in order to revive the health sector.
