Fifty Five Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camping in new Kunchigoro, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to commence a six month training on shoe making, tailoring and welding technology.
The six month intensive training is part of the 2016 T.Y. Danjuma cum All Children Charity International Foundation (ACCIF) ‘IDPs skills training program’.
In 2015, 50 IDPs camping in Pegi, a community in Kuje Area Council of Abuja benefited from the first phase of the Foundation’s training program and the New Kunchigoro camp is one of the four camps that has over 2000 IDPs in Abuja who fled their homes as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in the North Eastern part of Nigeria.
Speaking during a one day Orientation ceremony in Abuja, the Executive Director of ACCIF, Barrister Ranti Bosede Daudu said the IDPs would go through an intensive training, after which each trainee will be given startup equipments at the end of the six months period.
According to her, the training which is aimed at making the IDP’s self reliant as well as provide means to cater for the needs of their
families anywhere they find themselves rather than depending on
charity, will have twenty of them “train in tailoring; 25 in shoes making; while 10 will be train in welding technology”.
The Executive Director added that lunch and training materials will be made available for the trainees on daily basis in the cause of their training days.
“Each of the vocation will have two trainers and an entrepreneurial class is being put in place for the trainees where they will be taught business skills and management on how to effectively manage their own businesses afterwards”, she noted.
Mrs Daudu explained that the foundations’ aim is to cater for persons with disability and the vulnerable in the society, and the assistant rendered to the IDPs was as a result of their displacement and that training them in various skills will make them rely less on charity but something they can rely on for a life time.
She therefore urged the 55 IDPs to be dedicated and committed in
the course of their training and expressed her gratitude to the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation for their excellence service to humanity.
In her remark, the Representative of the T.Y. Danjuma Founadation, Gima Forje enjoined the trainees to take the training very serious so as to be empowered to be able to train others in future.
According to him, the foundation is committed to reaching out to the less privilege in the society.
One of the beneficiaries, Danjuma Andrawus who spoke on behalf of others and a father of four, expressed appreciation to the foundation for coming to train them in various skills.
He however called on the federal government to work out modalities on restoring peace in the North-East, so that they can go back to their farms as many of them are farmers who are now idle in strange lands.
