3rd Orphanage Sports Festival begins in Abuja on Friday
By Jacob Onjewu Dickson
The Third edition of the Orphanage Homes Sports Festival Nigeria (OHSFN), will begin at the National Stadium, Abuja on Friday, featuring orphanages from the six geo-political zones of the country.
The festival which is the brainchild of the Challenged Children
Charity Foundation (3CF) will feature five sporting activities,
callisthenic displays, fashion parade and exhibitions of photographic paintings, arts and crafts.
The sporting events are; football, scramble, badminton, volleyball, table tennis and athletics.
In an interview with New Nigerian Sports in her office in Abuja, founder of 3CF, Barrister Ugonna Uzor-Kalu stressed that the competition was being organized to give the children at the orphanages a sense of belonging.
She disclosed that the kids who distinguish themselves at the end of the competition would be sponsored to sports academies where they can further polish their skills, through a fund that would be raised from donors.
She explained that the objective of the competition is to use sports to provide opportunities for children who would have become miscreants, touts or thugs.
“It is also aimed at using sports as a catalyst for peace and social development, as well as provide the platform for players who will play professional soccer in Nigeria and abroad,” she added.
The competition which would be featuring two categories; U-6 to 12 and U-12 to 17 year olds, is a noble initiative that should be emulated by others.
All the participants would be provided free feeding by 3CF.
The closing ceremony of the two-day event will be held on Saturday.
