The Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital,(UCH), Ibadan, Prof. Temitope Alonge on Monday said no fewer than 3,000 people are to benefit from the free screening, treatment and surgeries of the hospital and the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja.
Professor Alonge who disclosed this in Ibadan while addressing newsmen on the activities lined up for the 60th Foundation Anniversary, the UCH declared that the free screening, treatment and surgeries are to be for non communicable diseases such as uterine fibroid,hypertension, diabetes, cataract, cleft lip, Inguino-scrotal hernia, infantile hernia and Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF)among the lesss privileged in the society.
Professor Alonge pointed out that beneficiaries of the exercise tagged Rapid Results Initiative are also enjoy the hospital’s necessary surgical operations at the end of their diagnosis, while people from other parts of the state would be keyed into the system later as it would be a continuous exercise.
According to Professor Alonge, those to benefit in the pilot scheme of the free screening, treatment and surgeries are to be drawn from 11 metropolitan Local government areas of Oyo state namely Akinyele, Ibadan North West, Ona Ara, Lagelu, Iddo, Oluyole, Ibadan North East, Egbeda, Ibadan South East, Ibadan South West and Ibadan North.
Speaking on the impression that communicable diseases kill more people than non-communicable diseases, he noted that for years, attention had been given to communicable diseases which prompted medical practitioners to produce vaccines that would check its spread with little attention to non-communicable diseases which in turn now kills more people than communicable diseases.
He added that there are vaccines for communicable diseases such as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, AIDS which could make the patients suffering from it to live long while it was not same with diabetes, stroke, hypertension and other non communicable diseases which have no vaccines and can kill people slowly.
Professor Alonge hinted that of 74,150 indigent people that would benefit from the programme in 55 teaching and Federal Medical Centres across the country, UCH was given the permission to treat 545 patients and that UCH would exceed the number.
The Chief Medical Director declared that the exercise has already kicked off yesterday (Monday) from Moniya in Akinyele Local government area of the state,adding that UCH is to take care of 2,000 to 3,000 patients at the end of the programme.
Given the breakdown of the exercise,he hinted that said UCH was permitted to treat 100 hernia cases each in adults and children, 50 cases of cleft lips and cleft palate and 200 cases of cataract, 20 cases of uterine fibroid, 50 cases of Vesicovaginal Fistula and 20 cases of cataract.
