As political activities for 2023 general elections
This is to give hope to the people, guide the electorate and unite the state, while pledging to open its doors to all aspirants, political parties and groups who will want to meet with the Union.
The union in a communique issued after its February general congress, held at NUJ Press Centre, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, cautioned members who are in the habit of generating sensational stories to be guided in their reportage, to prevent breeding distrust and heating up the polity.
Congress advised politicians in the state and their supporters to play the game by the rules, while urging members of the Union to remain professional and disciplined in the course of discharging their duties.
Congress applauded the Commissioner for Lands and Water Resources, Pastor Umo Eno, who is also a gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for coming to consult the NUJ on his aspiration, and encouraged other aspirants to do so
In the same manner, Congress commended the Grand Patron of NUJ, Zone ‘F, and immediate past Chief of Staff to the Governor, Akparawa Ephraim Inyangeyen for his support to the Union as well as his services to the state government and wished him well in his future endeavours.
Congress commended the state government for resuming the payment of pension arrears owed retired civil servants in the state and appealed to government to, in the same spirit, look into pension arrears of retired primary school teachers and others.
Congress reminded relevant government ministries and agencies in the state about the environmental pollution caused by a Chinese Company occupying the former Solid Rock Kingdom Church building along Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, and appealed to them, especially the Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals to address the issue as soon as possible to avoid further health hazard to residents.
It also called on the state government to provide portable drinking water to riverine communities in the state to ameliorate their sufferings.
Congress drew attention of the Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) and other allied agencies to the near absence of Zebra Crossing and other road signs on roads in the state capital, urging them to address the issue for the safety of school children and other road users.
The communique was signed by Chairman and Secretary of the Communique Drafting Committee, Comrades Kufre Emmanuel and Edidiong Obot respectively and counter-signed by the State Chairman of the Union, Comrade Amos Etuk and Secretary, Comrade Dominic Akpan.
