Akwa United FC of Uyo on Wednesday, humbled the visiting Warri Wolves by 3-0 on match day 34 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo.
Charles Atshimene and Ubong Friday got the victory for Akwa Utd, a.k.a the Promise Keepers.
Akwa United dominated the match and tightened its defense to avoid conceding any goal from the visitors and fortified its attack with introduction of four players in the second half of the encounter.
The victory means well for Akwa United as their chances of clinching the NPFL title this season become brighter.
Also, the fall of Nasarawa United to Lobi Stars of Makurdi, Kano Pillars to Enugu Rangers and Rivers United to Jigawa Golden Stars on Wednesday is a propeller for Akwa United.
Nasarawa United were beaten 3-2, Kano Pillars were unable to reply the two goals from the South Eastern Clubside and Rivers United goofed to Jigawa Golden Stars by 2-1.
With the development, Akwa United FC have 64 points and are six points clear from the second and third placed teams, although Enyimba FC who have 57 points and sitting fourth, are yet to execute thier game.
Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars have 58 points while Rivers United are fifth with 56 points.
Speaking with sports journalists shortly after the match, Head Coach of Akwa United FC, Kennedy Boboye said his players “showed class in Wednesday’s game.”
The coach who stated that the club was yet to reach the point of lifting the league title, called on the players to continue with the high spirit.
He however, was optimistic that the team would play each game to win to secure the league title.
