The Northern Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has hailed the rejection of the nomination of Ms Lauretta Onochie, an erstwhile New Media Aide to President Muhammadu Buhari as INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner to Represent Delta State by the Nigerian Senate.
NYCN described the rejection by the Senate as victory for democracy and confirmation of the Independence of the National Assembly.
The President, Northern Youths Council of Nigeria, Comrade Isah Abubakar, in a statement, the group cautioned those who wrongly counselled Mr President to make such nomination that can best be described as Coup against the Nigeria Constitution to desist from misleading him or risked facing the anger of Northern youth.
The council enjoined the leaders of the National Assembly and other Legislative wings to continue to put Nigeria’s democracy first above party/individual sentiments, pointing out that without democracy, Mr Senate President would have been handling chalk in classroom or Mr Speaker would have been busy in Court without the hope of occupying the sensitive positions democracy afforded them.
The group further urged the members of the National Assembly to ensure that they safeguard democracy for the future generation so that their children would benefit from it too.
Recall that on 10th June, 2021 Northern Youths urged the Senator Ahmed Lawan led 9th Assembly to at least put Nigeria first and reject Lauretta Onochie as INEC Commissioner, reminding them that they swore with the Holy Qur’an/Bible to uphold the Constitution of Nigeria not to serve the interest of an individual.
