A’Ibom Govt Shuts School Over Threat To Principal’s Life By Students

Uyo High School located in the heart of the state capital, has been shutdown indefinitely by the the Akwa Ibom State Government over alleged threat to life of the Principal of the College, Mr. Michael Etuk by students.
Government ordered through the chairman of the state secondary education board, Dr Ekaette Ebong Okon on Thursday to avert the possible danger on both lives and property in the school.
The students went overbearing when they stormed the school’s compound early Thurday and placed fetish objects in front of the Principal’s office and gave him 24 hours ultimatum to release their colleagues from police detention.
It was gathered that trouble started in the school about three weeks ago when some students were fighting within themselves after school hours in front of a petrol station adjacent to its gate.

Some staff of the station were said to have tried to caution the students to embrace peace and stop the fight but they instead, invaded the fuel station, destroying the pumps and glasses in offices.
But unknown to the students, the CCTV camera had captured their images while they were vandalizing the station, making it easier for police afterwards to arrest six of them now in detention .
The manager of the petrol station, Mbereobong Itoro Elijah said fuel dispenser, office glasses and other facilities at the station were destroyed.
“My name is Mbereobong Itoro Elijah. I am the manager of this petrol station. It happened about three weeks ago after school had dismissed. Students were fighting in front of our station which is opposite the school and were running inside the station. My director and I rushed out and saw them crowding here .We pleaded with them to to stop the fight. While we were pleading with one group inside the station, another group was throwing stones at our glasses and others were pulling down our fuel dispenser, making us to run inside our office for safety.
“Because we  have CCTV camera that captured them, when police were drafted to the place, the students ran away. Six of them were later arrested after three weeks. They are now in detention,” she said.
When our Correspondent visited the school located along Oron Road on Thursday, fetish items such as red cloth, palm oil poured on the floor, whitish substances and other objects were found at the door step of the principal’s office.
The items littered on the floor with placards and some inscriptions such as, “we give you 24hrs to release our boys or we fall you. Remember, we know your house, children and wife, Mr  Principal. We always defend you during the fight with Technical College but you can’t defend us.”
Speaking to our correspondent, one of the students identified as Keziaha Joseph said they were shocked to see the fetish objects in front of the principal’s office .
“All of us were shocked to see those fetish items and the principal asked all of us to go home. we don’t know what to do now”
When contacted, the State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idobgesit Etiebet confirmed that she ordered the State Chairman of Secondary School Board, Dr Ekaette Ebong Okon to close the school for security reasons.
