Chief Executive Officer of Monarch Boxing Promotions, Prince Stanley Williams has said that there is need for government to give financial support to boxing promoters even as he assured thathis outfit is keen on creating good platform that will enable the country’s professional boxers get to the peak of their career.
According to him, his outfit having successfully staged a World title fight last two years in the country at the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, he is mapping out strategies on having more fights in the country to enable pugilists get adequate exposure and ranking by the various World boxing bodies.
” We’ve organised a World title fight in Nigeria and other countries like Ghana, Australia, United Kingdom and the United States and we hope to organise more in Nigeria’, began the well traveled promoter.
” Right now, our plan is to help as many Nigerian boxers as possible achieve their potentials and immediately after a show we’re planning in a resort in Owerri, the Imo State Capital, we’II come out with our next boxing promotion ,he assured.
Prince Williams however noted that promoting fights is capital intensive and promoters are always discouraged when they don’t recoup their investment and called on government to come to their aide.
‘ You know in this part of the world , sports is still at its infancy unlike in the developed world where you get a lot of endorsements. Look at the amount of money the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is putting on the table to promote Anthony Joshua/ Tyson Furry World title fight, we need such encouragement from our government and corporate organisations to make professional boxing in Nigeria move forward”, he concluded.
