The Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) on Wednesday asked the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress(TUC) to declare a 24-hour strike and mass protest on insecurity and socio-economic crises in the country.
SPN in a statement jointly signed its Acting National Chairperson, Comrade Abiodun Bamigboye and its National Secretary, Comrade Chinedu Bosah also condemned the attack on protesters in Abuja on Monday by the Nigeria Police Force.
The party pointed out, ” again SPN reiterates its call on the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and Trade Union Congress(TUC) to declare a 24-hour strike and mass protest on insecurity and socio-economic crises.”
According to the party, there is the need for the government to rise up and address the spate of insecurity ravaging the country vis and vis banditry kidnapping, terrorism etc
The party lamented that it was unfortunate that the government could be drafting security agencies to visit violence against the protest called by The People’s Alternative Political Movement (TPAP-M) against the alarming state of insecurity in the country .
SPN alleged that the violence was so brutal that Omoyele Sowore, activist and former presidential candidate in the last general elections, was allegedly shot and teargas was used to disperse protesters, saying, ” this shows that the Buhari- led regime is prepared to continue to clamp down on the democratic rights of Nigerians to peaceful assembly”.
” Again while the huge number of security forces the regime often deployed to repress harmless and peaceful protests is a reflection of the intolerance of the Buhari pro-capitalist government, it also underscores its complete bankruptcy and failure”, it said.
The party added, ” we hold that such a huge number of security forces could have been better deployed to address the spate of insecurity ravaging the country vis and vis banditry kidnapping, terrorism etc.”.
” It is in the light of this, the SPN condemns the deployment of armed police to repress Abuja protest against insecurity and poverty and demands immediate arrest and prosecution of ACP Hyelhira Altine Daniel and other officers involved in the barbaric act of shooting Omoyele Sowore and using violence to disperse protesters who were only exercising their democratic rights.
” We equally argue that only a socialist transformation of the Nigeria state, arising as a product of the victorious struggle of the working masses of Nigeria to overthrow capitalism, that can change the situation positively for millions of Nigerian masses who are being shortchanged by the capitalist ruling class” .
The party stressed, ” this is because so far, the Buhari/APC and the entire capitalist ruling class have more than ever demonstrated their inability and incapacity to positively change the situation for Nigerians as mass suffering amidst a huge human and material resources continues.”
