A Police Constable, PC Edogi Bassey, attached to Etim Ekpo Police Area Command in Akwa Ibom State has been gunned-down in a fresh attack on the police station in the state by unidentified gunmen in the early of Wednesday, May 12, 2021.
During the attack, a section of the Police Area Commands’ building was set ablaze by the unknown gunmen who went there in two vehicles.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, SP Odiko MacDon who confirmed the incident in a press statement, saidthe unidentified gunmen were many and armed to the teeth.
According to SP Macdon, the police officers on ground had engaged the attackers in a shootout through which they were able to avert what would have been a serious carnage on the station.
The exchange of gun fire the PPRO added, although cost the life of a policeman, forced the attackers to depart the Etim Ekpo Area Command for Ika Local Government Divisional Police Station to rain another havoc but were unsuccessful.
“At about 6:30am today, Armed Men, in their numbers, armed with AK 47 Rifles and other dangerous weapons, in two vehicles attacked the rented building housing the Etim Ekpo Area Command and Division. The undaunted and vigilant Police Officers on duty, gallantly fought back, repelled them and averted the intended carnage. Unfortunately, a dedicated Officer, one PC Edogi Bassey paid the supreme price while a small portion of the building was touched.

“The gunmen who proceeded to Ika Division to perpetrate their nefarious activities were successfully again repelled leaving the Station intact without loss of lives or arms”, SP MacDon stated.
The state police spokesman, who described the unfortunate incident as an “unacceptable worrisome trend” said that the command in the state was doing some to address the ugly trends but required the collation of all.
He added, “The Commissioner of Police, CP AMIENGHEME ANDREW who is going round formations and Divisions to ensure alertness and safety of Officers, Men and the People has called on law abiding Citizens to volunteer timely information that will enable the Police tackle the present security challenges.”
