Ecosystem Restoration: Environmentalists Seek Partnership With Kaduna Assembly

Group of concerned environmentalists on Thursday sought collaboration from the Kaduna State House of Assembly Committee on Environment to restore the state’s ecosystem.
West African Coordinator, Africa Climate Reality Project, Gloria Bulus,  who led the team, made the appeal in an advocacy visit to the Assembly Committee on Environment in Kaduna.
According to her, the appeal was necessary to address challenges on the ecosystem of the state which has been heavily deforested as a result of urbanization and logging.
She said tackling the issue has been slow due to low level of intergovernmental coordination, citizens’ participation in the implementation of public sector initiative at all government levels.
Bulus mentioned that the demand of arable land for the purpose of agriculture, felling of trees for fuel wood, harvesting of natural forest as preoccupation has put the existing ecosystem at risk.
“We are appealing to the committee who has the capacity to lead a multi-stakeholder campaign for a year of action for restoring the state ecosystem,’’ she said.
She commended the committee for passing the state Forestry Law to strengthen departments of forestry, other relevant agencies to address deforestation to conserve our natural resources.
Responding, Bala Kuyello, Chairman of the Committee, commended the group for the initiative towards plans to change the environment and for people to understand the dangers of climate change.
He said the conduciveness of the environment determines how healthy we live, hence, the need to work with all stakeholders to ensure a safe environment.
Kuyello assured the group that the committee would give all the support needed to save the state from deforestation and pollution that causes climate change.
