Nigeria Copyright Commission Marks IP Day, Pledges Support For SMEs

The Nigerian Copyright Commission has reiterated its resolve to place the Small medium Enterprises (SMEs) on the pedestal of national economy for the overall development of the country. 

Speaking in Kaduna on Monday on the occasion of the celebration of this year’s World Intellectual Property Day, the Director, Kaduna Directorate of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Madam Hassan Usman said the commission was ready to assist the SMEs realise its dream as the backbones of national economies. 

He said the theme of this year: “IP and SMEs: Taking your ideas to market”, is an indication that SMEs serve as incubators for innovations and wellsprings of creativity which account for over 90 per cent of the world’s businesses and a significant portion of the global workforce. 

Madam Usman said the celebration was to create awareness for the operators of SMEs on the need to protect works of those in the literary, musical, artistic, sound recordings, cinematography films, live performances and expressions of folklore from been pirated at the detriment of the rightful owners. 

“Ours is to encourage those of you in the sector, you need to be guided y law so that you don’t fall into the hands of those criminal tendencies that are there to milk from where they did not sow thereby endangering you.

“The war of piracy is a war to be fought by all stakeholders “, he added. 

The Director explained to all the operators of numerous places visited some of the ills of piracy that includes killing of creativity, stealing of income from right owners, diversion of revenue accruable to government, encouraging production of substandard goods, funding of other crimes, destruction of the nation’s economy among others. 

He admonished them to always pursue legitimate businesses such as production of only authorized copies, sale and buy and use only genuine copyright works, register copyright works with Nigerian Copyright Commission, reportage of cases of piracy  among others. 

He warned them against production or importation of pirated works,  sale and hawking of pirated works and buying or using of pirated works. 

The commission visited dealer of Microsoft wares office,  Micromanna Ltd,  Dstv Kaduna office , a printing outfit, Exceptional Colors, DITV station, and a host of others.
