The essence of extending standard gauge railway system to Apapa seaport in Lagos is to eradicate multiple handling of cargoes.
Managing Director of Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Engr. Fidet Okhiria, stated this when he accompanied Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, on a tour of the seaport environment.
They were there to evaluate the  need to demolish Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) building in order to extend rail tracks to the port seaside.
“The essence of the rail is to move freight. We’ve to get to the port seaside meaningfully, not just getting to the port. This has to happen so that multiple handling of cargoes will be eradicated,” Okhiria clarified.
He maintained that rail transport system will facilitate easier movement of passengers and goods.
Rail road has to reach to the port to enable ships to load directly to the rail tracks, the NRC leader explained.
He said that it is only when the rail tracks reach the seaside that multiple handling of cargoes will stop.
