The attention of the South West Zonal Secretariat of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has been drawn to a purported setting up of election planning committee (SWANECO) by the Lagos chapter without recourse to the processes prescribed by statute of the association.
According to a statement by the South West Vice President, Seun Ajayi-Obey For the avoidance of doubt, Article 12 G(ii) of SWAN statute expressly stipulates that “without prejudice to the functions of the Zonal Secretariat, every action/position taken or reached by a committee set up to conduct elections into offices at the chapter level, shall be provisional and subject to ratification by the National Secretariat”.
‘Recall also that an Enlarged National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of SWAN held in Abuja recently in its communique mandated the Zonal secretariats to ensure the conduct of elections, on or before March 31, 2021, in states where tenures of the executives have elapsed”.
Arising therefrom, the executive of Lagos chapter of SWAN, whose tenure has since expired, could not have unilaterally set up an election committee and even fix date without following laid down procedures.
For good measure, the SWAN Statute requires that the Zonal and National Secretariats MUST be informed immediately SWANECO has been constituted and all contestants for elective positions MUST be re-screened and cleared by the National Secretariat.
The Zonal and National secretariats of SWAN are not aware of any planned election in Lagos chapter and therefore views such action, if it exist, as null and void.
It is expected that the executive of Lagos chapter of SWAN currently riding on the three months grace granted by the statute, will do the needful, as the Zonal and National Secretariats will not hesitate, and are capable to take necessary actions against acts that contravene the extant laws of the Association or deemed detrimental to its wellbeing.
